WalletHub: Indianapolis Leads Nation In Credit Score Gains

MIAMI--Consumers in several major U.S. cities posted meaningful improvements in their credit scores over the past year, led by Indianapolis, according to a new WalletHub analysis comparing first-quarter 2026 data with the same period in 2025.
WalletHub found Indianapolis recorded the largest year-over-year increase, with the city's average credit score rising 3.03% from 595 to 613. Chula Vista ranked second with a 1.91% increase, followed by San Bernardino (1.69%), Detroit (1.59%) and Baltimore (1.50%).
Among the nation's largest cities, several Texas and Arizona markets also posted notable gains, including San Antonio, Fort Worth, Phoenix and Plano. At the other end of the rankings, average credit scores declined in a handful of cities, with St. Louis posting the largest decrease at 1.99%, followed by Boston (0.89%) and Durham (0.63%).
The WalletHub study analyzed average consumer credit scores across the 100 largest U.S. cities using first-quarter 2026 and first-quarter 2025 data to identify where residents made the greatest year-over-year progress in improving their credit profiles.
