Iowa Governor Proclaims ‘Credit Union Day’ As Industry Marks Impact At State Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa—Gov. Kim Reynolds proclaimed Aug. 20 “Credit Union Day in Iowa,” recognizing the industry’s role in the state as credit union leaders marked the occasion during Credit Union Day at the Iowa State Fair.
In her proclamation, Reynolds noted Iowa’s 67 credit unions serve more than 1.5 million members and generate an estimated $2.7 billion in annual economic impact. The industry directly employs 5,050 Iowans and supports an average of 10,000 jobs annually, according to the proclamation.
“The Iowa State Fair brings Iowans together from every corner of the state, making it a fitting place to recognize the impact of credit unions in our local communities,” said Murray Williams, president and CEO of the Iowa Credit Union League. “Every day, credit unions help Iowans navigate important financial decisions while investing in the communities where their members live and work. We’re grateful to Governor Reynolds for recognizing that impact and celebrating Credit Union Day in Iowa.”
The Iowa Credit Union League said credit unions account for nearly two-thirds of auto loans and one-third of home loans made in the state. Reynolds’ proclamation also cited credit unions’ efforts to expand financial access in rural and underserved areas, provide financial education and support community development.
