America’s Credit Unions: 53 Of 55 PAC-Backed Candidates Advance in Primaries

WASHINGTON—America’s Credit Unions said candidates backed by its political action committee posted a strong showing in Tuesday’s primary elections, with 53 of 55 supported candidates advancing to the general election and two races still too close to call.
“A key component of successful advocacy is electing credit union champions to Congress so that our interests are protected from Main Street to the halls of Capitol Hill,” Trey Hawkins, head of political affairs at America’s Credit Unions, said in a statement. Hawkins said the results underscore the influence of the credit union movement and its efforts to support lawmakers who understand and champion credit union priorities.
Primary elections were held Tuesday in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. Among the key results, PAC-supported candidate Brad Sherman advanced to the general election in California’s newly drawn 32nd Congressional District following a member communications campaign that included digital advertising, mail and voter outreach. The National Advocacy Fund partnered with California’s Credit Unions on the effort.
America’s Credit Unions also reported that PAC-supported Young Kim was running in a close race that remained uncalled as of Wednesday morning but was expected to advance. Other PAC-backed candidates securing nominations included Mike McGuire, Jacqui Irwin, Marty Jackley and Kurt Alme. The organization said it is now turning its attention to Utah’s June 23 Democratic primary, where it is supporting former Congressman Ben McAdams in the state’s open 1st Congressional District race.
