Late-Night Government Funding Deal Appears To Be Coming Together As Shutdown Nears

WASHINGTON — Late Thursday night, as the Senate prepared to work past midnight in a last-ditch effort to avert a partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump and Senate Democrats said they had reached an agreement to fund the federal government ahead of Friday’s midnight deadline, POLITICO reported.
The emerging deal would keep most federal agencies funded through Sept. 30, while providing only a short-term extension for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Trump said he is pressing lawmakers to act quickly. “I am working hard with Congress to ensure that we are able to fully fund the Government, without delay,” he wrote on Truth Social, urging both parties to support a bipartisan vote, POLITICO reported.
According to a spokesperson for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the agreement includes a two-week extension of current DHS funding levels, giving lawmakers time to negotiate potential changes to immigration enforcement policy. Senate leaders had not yet formally announced the deal on the floor late Thursday, as GOP leadership aides worked to assess member support and head off potential amendments that could slow passage, POLITICO said.
Even if the Senate clears the agreement quickly, a brief partial shutdown could still occur early Saturday, since the House is in recess until Monday. Speaker Mike Johnson said it could take days to recall members to Washington, though Trump’s backing could accelerate the process. Leadership aides cautioned that votes in the House may not occur until next week, making a short shutdown increasingly likely, POLITICO reported.
