MSUFCU Scores Landmark 10-Year Jersey Patch Deal With Michigan State Athletics
By CU Today Staff —
EAST LANSING, Mich.—Michigan State University has signed a 10-year sponsorship agreement with MSU Federal Credit Union that will place the credit union's logo on the uniforms of all 23 varsity sports programs, marking what reports describe as the first department-wide jersey patch sponsorship in the Big Ten.
The partnership will extend beyond game uniforms to practice apparel and football helmet bumpers.
The agreement comes as college athletic departments aggressively pursue new revenue streams following the implementation of athlete revenue-sharing rules and rising competitive pressures. Jersey patch sponsorships have emerged as one of the industry's fastest-growing commercial opportunities, with schools across the country seeking corporate partners willing to pay for prominent branding on uniforms, Sports Business Journal said.
According to reporting by Sports Business Journal, Michigan State's deal adds to a growing list of colleges monetizing uniform sponsorship assets that were once prohibited under NCAA rules. Industry executives have projected jersey patches could generate seven-figure annual revenues for major athletic programs, while schools view the sponsorships as a way to diversify revenue without placing additional financial demands on fans and donors.
For $8.5-billion MSUFCU, the agreement deepens a longstanding relationship with the university community the credit union was founded to serve. The East Lansing-based institution has long maintained close ties to Michigan State students, alumni and employees, and the uniform sponsorship provides one of the most visible branding opportunities available in college athletics.
