Trump Cancels Housing Act Signing

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump unexpectedly postponed a scheduled signing ceremony for the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Wednesday, tying the measure's fate to congressional action on his election-integrity legislation, according to POLITICO.
As CUToday.info reported Tuesday, the housing package cleared Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support and includes the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, a long-sought credit union provision that updates board meeting requirements. The legislation also contains a range of housing affordability measures designed to increase housing supply, expand homeownership opportunities and limit the influence of large institutional investors in the single-family housing market.
But hours before the scheduled signing ceremony, Trump announced on Truth Social that he was canceling the event until Congress passes the SAVE AMERICA Act, which he described as a "National Emergency," POLITICO reported. The move surprised congressional leaders, who had been publicly celebrating the bill's passage and expected enactment this week.
Speaker Mike Johnson indicated the delay does not necessarily jeopardize the legislation, telling reporters that Trump intends to use part of the 10-day review period available to him before taking action on the bill, according to Politico. Johnson said he expects the measure ultimately will be signed.
Under the Constitution, if a president neither signs nor vetoes a bill within 10 days, excluding Sundays, while Congress remains in session, it automatically becomes law. Congress also retains the authority to override a presidential veto.
