Thousands Locked Out As Navy Federal Outage Slams Mobile Banking

By CU Today Staff —

VIENNA, Va.—Navy FCU confirmed it experienced a service outage that disrupted access for thousands of members, with the credit union saying its technology team was working to restore services, according to the Hindustan Times.

“ALERT: We're experiencing a service outage that’s impacting service to members,” Navy Federal said in a post on X cited by the Hindustan Times. “Our team is utilizing all available resources to help address the issue. Thank you for your patience.”

The Hindustan Times reported the disruption began at about 4:05 p.m. ET Wednesday and initially said reports to Downdetector peaked at roughly 3,300 around 5:05 p.m. ET. The outlet said 67% of reports involved Navy Federal’s mobile app, while 21% involved login problems and 7% involved mobile banking. Reports declined after the peak but remained elevated.

Other reporting indicated the disruption may have been considerably broader than the early figures cited by the Hindustan Times. GV Wire reported that more than 7,000 users had reported problems to Downdetector as of 2:19 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday. Downdetector figures represent reports submitted by users and do not necessarily correspond to the number of members affected.

The Hindustan Times said hundreds of members took to social media to complain about being unable to conduct banking activities, with one member saying the outage prevented access to the app needed to unlock a card. Navy Federal had not disclosed the cause of the outage in the reporting or provided additional details on the systems involved.
