World Credit Union Conference Opens In Sydney With Parade Of Flags, Global Focus

SYDNEY, Australia—The 2026 World Credit Union Conference officially opened Sunday with its signature Parade of Flags, as more than 2,400 credit union professionals from 39 countries gathered in Sydney for the annual global meeting of the cooperative finance movement.
The opening ceremony featured representatives from participating nations—many dressed in traditional attire—along with a Welcome to Country and Indigenous cultural performance honoring Australia's First Peoples. Organizers said the event highlighted the diversity and international reach of the global credit union system.
"The Parade of Flags is more than a tradition. It is a celebration of the people, cultures and shared purpose that make this global movement so special," Christi Swoboda, vice president of meetings and events for the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), said in a statement.
The ceremony also marked a leadership transition for Mike Lawrence, chair of the WOCCU board and CEO of the Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA), who delivered farewell remarks ahead of his retirement from COBA and the conclusion of his service as board chair.
"Credit unions are built on trust. They are rooted in their communities. This week, Sydney becomes more than a conference location. It becomes a meeting place for ideas, partnership and shared purpose," Lawrence said.
Hosted by WOCCU and COBA, the conference will feature keynote presentations from Freddie Ravel, Holly Ransom and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, along with breakout sessions, networking and discussions focused on innovation, collaboration and the future of cooperative finance.
