Mastercard Expands Push Into AI-Powered Commerce
By CU Today Staff —
PURCHASE, N.Y.—Mastercard is expanding its push into agentic commerce with new capabilities designed to allow artificial intelligence agents to discover products, assemble purchases and complete consumer-authorized transactions.
The company is expanding its Mastercard Agent Suite for Merchants and introducing Mastercard Agent Connect, which provides a single integration intended to connect merchants with AI agents, digital platforms and payment providers. Agent Connect will allow participating agents to access merchant product information and availability, recommend products, confirm final pricing, taxes and shipping, and complete transactions using payment credentials from any network.
Mastercard said merchants will determine which AI experiences can access their products while retaining control over pricing, fulfillment, customer relationships and other business rules. The company is also making Anthropic's commerce-agent blueprint available through Agent Suite, allowing merchants to build shopping agents using Claude models. Mastercard said it will continue working with Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies on agentic-commerce applications.
“When the agent moves beyond recommendations and starts making payments, the bar for what needs to work rises significantly,” said Felipe Goldin, chief technology officer at Bemobi.
Mastercard said companies and platforms planning to use or explore its agentic-commerce offerings include Fiserv, Global Payments, Samsung, Trip.com, Worldline, Moneris, Nexi, FreedomPay and Network International, among others.
