Anthropic Pulls New AI Models After U.S. Export-Control Order, Reports BankInfoSecuri

WASHINGTON—Anthropic has disabled public access to two of its newest artificial intelligence models after the U.S. government ordered the company to prevent foreign nationals from accessing them, according to BankInfoSecurity.
BankInfoSecurity reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick invoked export controls Friday, directing Anthropic to block access to its newly launched Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. Anthropic said it could not reliably verify every user's nationality in real time and therefore shut off access to the models for all users just three days after their debut.
According to BankInfoSecurity, Anthropic said the government did not specify the exact national security concern behind the directive, although the company believes officials became aware of a method for "jailbreaking" Fable 5's safeguards. Anthropic argued the reported vulnerability was narrow and noted that similar capabilities are available through other publicly deployed AI models, including OpenAI's GPT-5.5.
BankInfoSecurity reported that the dispute adds to growing tensions between Anthropic and the Trump Administration. The outlet noted that the Administration had previously sought to delay Fable 5's release and that the conflict follows a breakdown in negotiations between Anthropic and the Department of Defense, which later designated the company a supply-chain risk. Anthropic said it plans to release additional technical details regarding the government's concerns.
