Former Credit Union Employee Makes Run For Congress In North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C.--A former credit union employee is in the running to win the open Congressional seat in North Carolina’s 11th District, America's Credit Unions reported.
State Rep. Jennifer Balkcom was named by the local Republican party to run for the seat after Rep. Chuck Edwards’ (R-NC) withdrew from the race following the state primary.
"Balkcom’s candidacy is a chance to elect a candidate to Congress with strong credit union ties, following years of action and relationship-building by the Carolinas Credit Union League," ACU said. "Serving at the statehouse, Balkcom was a strong credit union champion. She also worked as a mortgage loan officer for both Mountain Credit Union and United Federal Credit Union, giving her valuable insight into the credit union difference."
“At the state level, Rep. Balkcom is a leader in the Republican caucus and has been a steadfast supporter of credit unions. From the beginning, she has been a trusted partner in our effort to modernize the North Carolina Credit Union Act, offering thoughtful guidance and strong support that was essential to seeing that update enacted earlier this year,” said Carolinas Credit Union League President/CEO Dan Schline. “Rep. Balkcom’s support is rooted in her experience. She’s worked in credit unions in western North Carolina and understands our mission—helping people solve real financial challenges and build stronger futures. We are thrilled she stepped forward to run for the House and proud to support Rep. Balkcom as she takes this next step in public service.”
In addition to supporting this year’s North Carolina Credit Union Act update, Balkcom has regularly met with the league and North Carolina credit unions at the statehouse and during League advocacy events, ACU said, adding it is supporting Balkcom, who will face Democratic challenger Jamie Ager in the Nov. 3 general election.
